I was fortunate to move into my home in 2006 and find that the previous owners, who were English, had constructed several large raised garden beds in a corner of the property, and fenced in the area to boot! This is an important consideration in Maryland, where the deer run rampant and feast on any unprotected plantings. They are known to jump fences to get to a garden, but my two Belgian Tervuren dogs are undoubtably a deterrent there, and the discouraged deer seem to move on to easier pickin's.
I grow veggies in the raised beds and a couple different varieties of raspberries along the fences. Because we live in a virtual forest, I only get about 6-7 hours of sun per day on the garden, so it's not as quick to produce as it could be, but eventually everything grows and I get a nice harvest, just a bit later than others.
